The year that went by, the year 2009, if for nothing else, than would be remembered for the commendable growth and success it brought in the broadband and high speed internet connectivity sector in the country and also within its sub-sectors. Here are the statistics: the residential broadband speed in the country increased by almost 28%, and the percentage increase in the speed of cable broadband subscribers was almost double when compared against the percentage increase in the speed of the fibre optic high speed broadband connection.
The above estimates were released by In-Stat, after it conducted a consumer survey in the country as regards their browsing habits, mode of connection, broadband access technology, the service provider, the speed received etc.. The various technologies for broadband access available in the market today are cable modem, DSL, and FTTH. Among these FTTH, i.e. Fibre-to-the-home technology is the latest and the most effective. It uses the optic fibre technology, that is the strands of glass are used for transmission of signal instead of conventional copper wires. This leads to an increase in the transmission speed and enhances the overall experience of internet browsing and downloading.
Further, the report also states that on an average, the downstream speed of a typical residential broadband connection in US is about 7.12 megabits per second, which is decent enough to say that the country has a good infrastructure of broadband capabilities. Moreover, around 25% of the survey respondents also said that they have an access to wireless broadband connection on their mobile, in addition to the regular cable broadband connection.
